The events of this past weekend and the terror attack at the Islamic Centre in Quebec City yesterday remind us all that the rights of minorities are under threat not just abroad, but right here at home.
Canada has a reputation for being a safe and welcoming country. For the most part, that reputation is deserved. But it would be naive of us to think that hatred, intolerance, and violence stop at our borders. Indigenous people, members of the LGBTQ+ community, Muslims, people of colour, women– all face continued hostility in person and online.
Tonight there is a vigil at the Alberta Legislature for the victims of the Quebec shooting, organized by the Alberta Muslim Public Affairs Council. If you are able, please attend. It starts at 6:30 PM.
The YWCA Edmonton strongly and categorically condemns all acts of hate and violence. We pledge to stand up to hate and intolerance when we see it. When the world isn’t safe for one of us, it isn’t safe for any of us.
