Opting In: Informed Choices for Healthy Futures

What's Changing?

As of September 2025, Alberta parents need to opt in if they want their children to receive sexual health education at school. New provincial legislation requires all schools to implement opt-in policies for topics such as:

  • Consent
  • Healthy relationships
  • Gender identity
  • Sexual orientation
  • Human sexuality

Why It Matters

Sexual health education is about more than biology. It’s also about:

  • Teaching youth how to communicate and set boundaries

  • Reducing gender-based violence through prevention

  • Helping kids build self-confidence and empathy

  • Supporting healthy decision-making and relationships

Research shows that students who receive comprehensive, evidence-based education delay sexual activity, use protection more consistently, and are better equipped to navigate safe, respectful relationships.

How Your Organization Can Help

We’re asking community partners to help ensure families know about the new opt-in requirement and understand why these lessons matter.

Here’s how:

  • Share the Let’s Talk About Sex (Ed) campaign on your social channels
  • Include the messaging in your newsletters or emails
  • Post flyers in your reception area or service spaces
  • Bring it up in conversations with clients and caregivers

Key Call to Action for Parents & Caregivers

Keep an eye out for your school’s opt-in policy — and remember to opt in.

It’s one small step that supports informed, healthy, and safe futures for Alberta youth.
