Celebrating the Legacy of YWCA Edmonton CEO Katherine O’Neill

This October, YWCA Edmonton will say farewell to our CEO, Katherine O’Neill, who will conclude her leadership with us on October 10. Since joining YWCA Edmonton in 2020, Katherine has been a collaborative and visionary leader who guided our 118-year-old organization through a time of immense change. Her positive, team-first approach has strengthened YWCA Edmonton’s foundation and positioned us for a bold and exciting future.

A Legacy of Accomplishment

Katherine’s leadership has left a lasting mark on YWCA Edmonton and our community. Together with staff, Board, and partners, she:

  • Brought stability and vision by leading the development of two strategic plans, including the 2025–2030 plan that outlines a transformational redevelopment of Camp Yowochas.
  • Built up capital and operating reserves to strengthen YWCA Edmonton’s long-term financial sustainability.
  • Expanded Disability Services through $7-million in new contracts and modernized systems that now support more than 200 children and adults.
  • Strengthened counselling and recovery services, including championing the innovative IDVRT pilot, which supports high-risk survivors of violence.
  • Advanced reconciliation and inclusion with YWCA Edmonton’s first Reconciliation Action Plan and the establishment of an Elders-in-Residence program now recognized across the country.
  • Created a new home for YWCA Edmonton, moving into a safe, accessible, and affordable main office during the pandemic.
  • Raised more than $1-million through the Rose Campaign and brought back the Women of Distinction Awards after a 10-year hiatus.
  • Oversaw major investments at Camp Yowochas, including the initial phase of a $2-million wastewater system replacement.
  • Spearheaded community partnerships and public campaigns such as the award-winning Searching for Izena project, the Edmonton Grads Art Exhibition, and collaborations with the Art Gallery of Alberta.
  • Contributed nationally by supporting YWCA Canada through roles on the National Strategic Plan Committee and CEO Recruitment Committee.

A Strong Future

Because of Katherine’s leadership, YWCA Edmonton is financially stable, innovative, and deeply rooted in community.

The Board of Directors is pleased to share that Christine McCourt-Reid, who has been part of YWCA Edmonton since 2019 and brings a deep passion for our mission, will serve as Interim CEO. Steps related to the search for a permanent CEO are already underway, and the Board will begin the official recruitment process as soon as possible.

A New Chapter

Katherine will soon begin a new chapter as President and CEO of YMCA of Northern Alberta, another legacy organization in our province dedicated to strengthening community and supporting families. YWCA and YMCA have long shared common goals, and we know that our shared commitment to creating safer, stronger and inclusive communities will continue.

With Gratitude

On behalf of our staff, Board, and community, we extend our deepest thanks to Katherine for her vision, her collaboration and her tireless commitment to building safer, stronger communities for all. Her legacy at YWCA Edmonton will continue to inspire us for years to come.
