International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also serves as a call to action for gender equity and the advancement of women’s rights worldwide. IWD has been observed on March 8th every year since 1911.
The origins of IWD can be traced back to the early 20th century when women’s rights activists in Europe and the United States began organizing for better working conditions, voting rights, and an end to discrimination. The first International Women’s Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland in 1911, with rallies and demonstrations demanding women’s rights and suffrage.
Since then, IWD has grown into a global movement, with millions of people coming together to celebrate the achievements of women and to advocate for gender equity and equality.
YWCA Edmonton is deeply committed to advancing gender equity and the empowerment of women and girls. We offer programs, events and workshops throughout the year, including on International Women’s Day, to raise awareness of gender issues and promote women’s rights. These events provide a platform for women and girls to share their stories, build connections, and advocate for change. By engaging in these efforts, YWCA Edmonton helps to build a stronger, healthier and more equitable community for all.
This International Women’s Day, join Capital Power in celebrating with us. Every donation made until March 15 will be matched by Capital Power, up to a total of $10,000. Empower Equity, donate today.
