October 11th marks a day of global significance – International Day of the Girl Child. This day
was established by the United Nations in 2011 to draw attention to the specific issues that girls face globally. It emerged from the women’s rights movement and the urgent need to address gender inequalities and discrimination affecting girls’ lives. Since then, it has become a platform to advocate for the full spectrum of girls’ rights.
Why International Day of the Girl Child?
The world has made progress towards gender equality, but significant challenges persist. In recent years, there has been a pushback against gender equality, threatening to undo the progress achieved. These challenges impact girls in particularly harsh ways, from maternal health care and parenting support to digital literacy, comprehensive sexuality education, and violence prevention.
