International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, honours the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women across the world. The day also serves as a focal point for women’s rights and a call to action to advance women’s equality. International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed for well over a century, with over a million people attending the inaugural IWD meeting in 1911. A century later, the day belongs to all groups worldwide collectively; it is not limited to any country, group, or organization. International Women’s Day has become a day to actively advocate, ally and celebrate.
YWCA Edmonton has been advocating for women and girls for over 115 years – supporting and empowering women and girls through many serious community hardships, including the two World Wars, The Spanish Influenza, the Great Depression and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Part of an international movement, YWCA Edmonton is a trusted provider of services, programs and advocacy work that transforms lives and helps build a stronger, healthier, and equitable community for all.
We strive to create lasting change, influencing public policy, empowering people to stand up for social justice and foster healthy, equitable communities. Our work aims to end gender-based violence, achieve economic equality, reduce barriers to social supports and foster leadership in women and girls.
We believe in a gender equal world – a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we are forging women’s equality. We can all #BreakTheBias. Join us as we celebrate International Women’s Day.
