BEV ESSLINGER
Bev is a married mother of two grown children and grandmother who has lived in Ward 2 for more than 18 years.
Bev has been a foster parent, School Council chair (Kensington, Killarney) and Community Playground committee member (Kensington, Weinlos). She has also worked for a number of non-profit organizations including Kids Kottage, Oliver Centre For Children & Families and as Executive Director for SHAPE (Albertas Walk to school program).
Bev served two terms as an Edmonton Public School Board Trustee and four years as a Chair of the Board. During that time, she served three years as a director for the Alberta School Boards Association as well as on a number of committees within Edmonton Public including the Multi-Cultural Task Force, community Engagement and District Priorities. Bev was instrumental in the development of a Board Strategic Plan and the inception of the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation. She also served on the Board of Governors of the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation.
Bev was first elected to City Council in 2013 and is now serving her second term. In her first term, she supported the implementation of school zones as part of the Traffic Safety Initiative. She continues to champion the women’s initiative and is working to build a child-friendly city. She also started the Gender Based Violence Initiative out of concern for the high numbers of families affected. She desires to see real change in the behaviours and statistics. She is also the City’s representative to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
Bev has served on the boards of a variety of community organizations including Society for Safe & Caring Schools and Communities, Edmonton Public Schools Foundation and Edmonton Sabres Marching Band. She also chaired the Provincial Active Transportation Committee and was a member of the Alberta Coalition for Chronic Disease Prevention.
Bev’s passion for her city and its citizens is demonstrated by her willingness to make Edmonton a better place to live. She has been actively engaged with people and programs and works tirelessly on their behalf. Her involvements have been diverse but her passion for helping people thrive is a common thread.
