Every July, Disability Pride Month celebrates the joy of identity and belonging. First established in 1990, this awareness event aims to change the way we think about disability, encouraging people to view it as a natural part of human diversity.
Here at YWCA Edmonton, we celebrate Individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and abilities; their identities and culture; and the positive ways they contribute to making our community more vibrant.
We first introduced our Disability Services in 1979 to offer respite to women caring for children with developmental disabilities, complex behavioural needs, physical limitations, and medical fragility. Today, our services include all adults and children with disabilities and their families. Providing short-term in-home relief care and full-time support home care not only prioritizes the unique needs and challenges of the Individual living with a disability, but reduces caregiver burnout, prevents family violence, and improves family emotional and financial stability.
A longstanding program offered by YWCA Edmonton is the Family Behavioral Consultation (FBC) Program, which offers one-on-one support to people of all ages living with exceptionalities and emergent behavioural concerns, as well as their families. With the help of our consultants, families can connect and foster stronger relationships.
Social isolation and loneliness are often experienced by Individuals with disabilities and their families. To address this issue, every month YWCA Edmonton’s Disability Services hosts the Joy Club — a cherished gathering where 50 to 60 Individuals and staff unite to embrace joy in all its forms. The club offers a vibrant array of activities, including crafts, cultural experiences, and games.
Joy Club exemplifies YWCA Edmonton’s commitment to fostering inclusive environments where every individual can thrive. By nurturing connections and fostering inclusivity, we take essential steps toward a more equitable society — one where accessibility and inclusion are catalysts for joy and belonging.
