I was introduced to This Bridge Called My Back in a class on the History of Feminist Thought. Edited by Cherríe Moraga and Gloria E. Anzaldúa, and first published in 1981, it is a collection of essays, letters, poems, photographs and so much more.
Each piece of writing captures the struggle of bridging the issues of the first wave of feminism to the third wave of feminism. The book shines a light on the voices of racialized, gender-diverse individuals navigating what building solidarity looks like and reimagining social activism through reciprocity and mutual understanding.
It has grounded me when I feel lost in the noise of the world and it gives me the moment to reflect on the bigger picture of what community is and how to cultivate a brighter space around me. If a friend were just about to dive into reading this book, I would tell them to cozy up and get ready to disconnect from the world and reconnect with themselves.
